Depression happens to the best of us. Tragedy strikes. You lose your job. Someone dies. You just aren’t where you want to *be* right now. Life is suddenly flipped, and you are wondering which way is up and which way is down. In the former, you can right yourself and quickly get back on your path. In the latter, you lose your footing and tumble head first into a dark hole. At first, it can be somewhat satisfying to be absorbed in this moment of self-pity. Then comes the realization that you’ve been in this position for so long now- your arms are heavy and you are weak- that you don’t know how you are going to make your way out of this alive. It really sucks.
Furthermore, our sadness has range. Depression can very much be like that of a playground swing- moving swiftly from one extreme to the other. In the back swing, your depression may be a constant nagging and heavy weight hanging over your head. On the up swing, your depression can take on a new height of anxiety and sadness. With one wrong move you could fall to your death..literally. It’s like one step away from suicidal, and that’s a scary place to be.
Can anyone relate to this?
I’ve had a good share of depression, for short stretches and long ones. I’ve cried and screamed and crumbled into a million pieces. I’ve also abused substance to ease the pain of living in a world that can be so confusing. If anything, it only magnified the confusion and left me even more lost.
I’m not a medical doctor, but I wanted to speak out on the issue of depression, to shed some light (and more importantly, HOPE) on the subject.
There IS HOPE. Hope can bring so much and sometimes it can be the only thing that helps you get into the shower in the morning. We are living in a broken society. One that is completely programmed to look outside of itself for happiness. One that wants you to feel horrible about yourself on a daily basis because behind it’s back it has a shiny little product that it wants you to buy. Society wants you to be a complete slave to it, feeding it and sucking the life from you.What it doesn’t want you to know, is that happiness IS obtainable, without products and 9-5 jobs.
Happiness cannot come from the outside. It has to come from within.
If you are suffering from depression, I have something I want to say to you.
Dear one, you are meant for SO much more.You, yes YOU right now, are so divine and delicious, that someone should be fanning you with giant palm leaves and dropping grapes into your mouth hole. You have the ability to fly out of your situation like a phoenix, and rise above these dark ashes. Inside of you, there is a miracle taking place. Your whole body is moving blood and breathing and thinking and reading these words. It’s keeping you here, because you have so much to live for. Yes, the world is crazy and scary and weird, and we can feel vulnerable in our human forms. But you my friend, you are a divine miracle! You are as amazing and complex as the cosmos. You are as beautiful and vast as a night sky. You are as emotionally deep as the ocean. You are as simple as a flower. You are as tasty as an freshly picked apple.
You are connected to divine source- call is God, call it the Universe, call it Love, whatever that may be. I believe in you and your ability to follow your passion and experience all the joy this universe has to offer. YOU DESERVE IT.
Don’t let the world ruin you. Don’t let people tell you that you are worthless. Don’t let people treat you with such unworthiness that you wilt like a thirsty flower. And don’t be afraid to ask. Ask for those connections. Ask for a shoulder to cry on. Ask to help you get back on your feet. There is no shame in that. If you are waiting around for people to help you on their own, you may be waiting a long time. People will help when you help yourself, in the form of asking and action.
In the meantime, EVERY DAY do something that makes you happy. This is one of the KEYS to unlocking depression. It could be painting. It could be motorcycles. It could be film. It could be writing. It could be setting tile. It could be karate, gymnastics, or mathematics. Whatever “IT” is- DO IT. Do it to survive, do it to love, do it to LIVE.
I could write an entire book on this. Maybe one day I will.
For now, please, PLEASE reach inside and help yourself. Things take time, but time can change- it can race like a speeding bullet when you have an epiphany and you really want to move forward. Books and friends and diet and lifestyle and herbs can all help ease us on this journey, but first you have to take a deep breath, look within and say:
” I DESERVE AND ABUNDANCE OF LOVE AND HAPPINESS!”
And then you jump, and trust.
