How to refresh your body in one week!!

I think it’s safe to say that most people had a good overdose of sugar during the holidays. While I tried to stay away from a “treats coma” throughout the month of December (it was mighty hard), on Christmas I had no shame about taking double scoops of whipped topping and having cake for breakfast!

That’s just what happens sometimes.

Now that it’s January though, you may be questioning those double scoops (damn them and their creamy goodness!). Without being too judgmental on ourselves, we can certainly make positive changes and do a mini detox.

Mini detox’s are great- they kick start the system, make you feel accomplished, and serve as a jumping off point for further improvement when it comes to healthy choices.

I find that committing to something for one week feels easier on our brains. You can do anything for one week! The best part is, by the time the week is over, you will have proved to yourself that YES YOU CAN DO IT! It will be a whole lot easier to take another step towards healthy choices if you choose to.

Refresh your body with a detox!

I think a lot of people slip up at this time of year because they place a death sentence on themselves. In other words, they set unrealistic expectations to be perfect when they haven’t prepared themselves for any kind of change to begin with.

“I’m going to eat healthy FOREVER!”

“I’m eating chocolate all day today, and then….NO MORE!!!”

“I’m getting up at 4:30 to work out EVERY DAY, I don’t care if it kills me!”

And so on.

This is a recipe for disaster from the get-go. Look, baby steps are good. You have to give yourself some prep space. An athlete doesn’t go out and run a marathon without preparation. You have to STRETCH before you lunge, right?

If you’ve been drinking coffee every morning, and then one day you decide to quit- listen, you may be feeling some withdrawal. Detoxing is letting that stuff get the hell out of your system. It’s airing out your clothes before you put them on.

Which brings me back to the one week detox- this can be your stretch before the big race! Once you detox, you can take the next step and add on what you see fit.

Whatever you do, just focus on one step at a time. You won’t get ANYWHERE if you are stressing yourself out!

Important Tips for a One Week Detox

  • If you can, stay away from alcohol. Sobriety is key when detoxing. If you are struggling with this, the first step would be to get sober, and then move on from there. Need a little help? Check out this book, “The Easy Way to Stop Drinking” or the latest version, “Stop Drinking Now.”
  • Stretching helps reduce stress. Do a few minutes of morning stretches to wake up your body and prepare yourself for the day.
  • Drink lots of water. I don’t really need to elaborate on this one- stay hydrated!
  • Go to bed early. Turn off the TV and hit the hay at a reasonable time. If you are struggling with sleeping, try listening to an audio book or try my meditation, “Heal While You Sleep.”
  • Minimize processed foods. This is the big one. For seven days, the focus should be to reach for as many fresh foods as you can!!! See below for my suggestions on foods.

Plant-Based Meal Ideas for One Week

Even if you are not a fully-committed vegan, one week of fresh veggies, fruits, nuts, and seeds will do your body good! Here are my recommendations for plant-based living to detox your body…

Breakfasts:

  • Fresh smoothies and green juices
  • Tofu scramble with shredded zucchini, bell peppers, onions, and mushrooms
  • Smoothie bowls with an assortment of nuts and seeds
  • Oatmeal with coconut milk and bananas

Small meals:

  • Raw fruits and veggies, such as sliced apples and carrot sticks
  • Nuts and seeds, such as almonds, peanuts, cashews, and sunflower seeds
  • Homemade granola bars and nut bars
  • Veggie based salads with homemade dressing (just a splash of olive oil, balsamic vinegar, Himalayan sea salt, and pepper)

Lunches:

  • Raw detox jalapeno coleslaw
  • Quinoa salad with black beans, green onions, and fresh green beans
  • Veggie based salads with plant protein, such as chickpeas and nuts
  • Whole wheat bread topped with fresh avocado, tomatoes, spinach, and a splash of olive oil for a bit of wet

What is your body telling you right now- what do you need? With our one week detox, the most important thing to remember is to be kind to ourselves. That’s why I choose to follow a plant-based lifestyle– it’s kind to my body and the planet. With our detox (or life in general), we don’t have to be perfect, but the more we choose to reach for healing foods and practices, the better we will feel.

And isn’t that the whole point? To feel good?

Hi Randi,
I love this post! Awesome tips and great meal plan ideas! After two months of holiday festivities and vacations I kicked off the New Year with a light mostly raw diet of lemon water, nourishing green smoothies, fresh fruit and hearty salads. I am feeling better already!
